But what brands could go?
Bentley would fit nice next to Daimler or even Toyota, as a flagship brand for those groups. VW has more flagship brands, like Porsche, Lamborghini and Bugatti, so I imagine they wouldn’t miss it too much.
What could other VW transactions look like.

I’d like to see VW lose Bugatti and Lamborghini. Primarily because I feel like both brands lost their identity with VW. Don’t really care who picks them up.

Ducati, Scania?

Just because there’s a goalie in the net, it doesn’t mean you can’t score!
VAG should sell everything to Sergio. FCA does trucks and SUVs as good or better than anyone, and same goes for VAG and cars.
Then they could make everything MQB-based, which would improve the FCA car and crossover lineup tremendously. They could also sell the Amarok as a Ram in the US, and stuff the V12 TDI into a pickup.
It would be glorious.

The big problem is that neither of them would have existed without VW. Lambo was hemorrhaging money and their cars were too unreliable. And Bugatti didn’t even really exist.

My offer stands to purchase Skoda. We can pay in Jalopnik stickers!

Seat - If a brand is to be chopped it will be Seat. Skoda is another ‘odd brand’ in a sense but it’s solid and they’re making money hand over fist with Skoda. Seat can easily be replace with VW badges.
Bentley - Land Rover / Jaguar anyone? It would fit right in and help them target a different demographic. Another potential buyer, Aston Martin. As odd as it is, it would help them expand with a big money maker and even though ‘SUV’s don’t conform with the brand since all owners already own a Land Rover’ - they can easily scrap the gussied up Toureg... aka Bentayga.
Bugatti - IT’S NOT GOING TO BE SOLD. Volkswagen Automotive Group lost $6.25 million per Veyron sold. No I’m not kidding. There were 450 Veyrons produced you do the math (a staggering $2812500000) ... Now they’ve finished developing the Chiron, they have a lot of money vested in their new super car as well and a lot of ground to make up. After spending that sort of money, they’re going to have to go forward with it to recoup anything.
Lamborghini - I’m not sure where this would go but BMW could be a fit. They want a super car and Lambo only shares a platform with the R8. This means it’s a fairly easy brand to cut off and pass on to another maker.
Ducati - We may see this sold off first. In 2011 Ducatt saw 16.6% growth, 2013 saw a mere 0.4% and 2014 only 2%. They’re a flatlined brand that could be gobbled up. By whom? I don’t know but it will be interesting to see how this plays out as it’s VAG’s most recent purchase.
Scania & Man - Both these are quick ways for VAG to get out of the commercial trucking business and grab some quick cash. Who’d buy them? Well Volvo is on a roll with their own commercial trucks, why not add a couple marques with lower price points to the stable?
Who’s to stay? VW, Audi, Porsche and Skoda are not going anywhere.

You’re asserting that Lamborghini would have ceased to exist had VW not picked them up? Lamborghini had been through a myriad of owners previously and would have found another. Had VW made them just as crazy but still reliable I wouldn’t have a complaint. From the moment they had their hands into the Diablo it was instantly less attractive, but easier to drive. Then the Murceilago, AWD and not symmetrical for the sake of function, how very German. Recently they are a bit more flamboyant but still to easy to use. They should be deadly, otherwise you wind up with rich douches using them as alternative posing mobiles.

I think the only brands VW could really sell would be Lamborghini and Ducati. Bugatti and SEAT would be likely to close. Bugatti loses money hand over fist. And SEAT is only dominant in the very depressed Spanish market. It’s not like SEAT has its own unique history, either. They used to rebadge Fiats. Now they rebadge VWs.
Bentley, Audi, Porsche, VW, and Skoda would all stay. They’re too successful and profitable.
VW could spin off their commercial vehicle division into a related subsidiary with independent investment opportunities. But it’s too stable a profit-maker to cut it off completely.

VW should get rid of Bugatti. Weren’t they losing money on each Veyron they made? If so, it’s a double win - money from the sale and saving money that would have been lost.
Freezing/cancelling development and refreshment of current models is a terrible long term solution. The market will notice and it’ll take 50% longer and 50% more money to restart the R&D and it’ll come to fruition after the market has sworn off the brand. If Audi isn’t R&D’d at a good rate they’ll fall back to where they were in 80/90s - a distant third among lux cars. Hell, now they have more competition then they used so it’ll be worse.
Maybe VW can convince Fiat to buy Lambo and keep italian brands Italian. Bentley might find a buyer (is Ford looking for a ultra premium brand?), maybe Mercedes will be interested in buying MAN?
The big rebates on gas models will help move some stock, too. I don’t know what their profit is off each model but every bit helps.

Well, anything with a lot of shared engineering and shared manufacturing plants couldn’t be separated easily. I’d say Porsche, Skoda, Audi, and SEAT are too strongly intertwined with the mothership to sell easily.
Lamborghini, Bugatti, Bentley, and Ducati could be separated relatively easily, but Bugatti in particular would be hard to sell, given its status as a perennial loss leading image builder for VW AG. Not every automaker wants to spend the money to bankroll an expensive vanity project.
They could just close down SEAT entirely, there would be a lot of one-time expenses associated with it, but, from what I understand, its been running in the red for quite some time, and that would save VW the costs of having to support another brand.
